Unleash Your Creativity with a Retro Sci-Fi Twist

Ever wondered how to transform an ordinary photo into an extraordinary piece of art? Imagine taking a simple snapshot of someone and turning it into a digital retro sci-fi portrait—sounds fun, right? We’re diving into this artistic adventure, breaking down the steps to create this cool effect that will leave your friends in awe and maybe even questioning whether they’re looking at a classic 80s movie poster or a snapshot from your latest weekend.

Step 1: Set Up Your Canvas

To get started, you’ll need to set up your document. Let’s work with a 1440 x 1500 pixels canvas with a resolution of 150 pixels per inch. This gives us a reasonably sized working area to bring out all those intricate details that make this effect pop.

Removing the Background

The first step is crucial—removing the background from your chosen subject. It’s all about isolating the person to focus on the fantastic elements you’re about to add. You can opt for different selection tools, but for simplicity, we’ll use the Quick Selection Tool. Use a relatively small point size to carefully select the area around the head. If you happen to select too much, simply hold ‘Alt’ (or ‘Option’ on Mac) to deselect those areas.

Step 2: Refining the Edges

We want smooth, clean edges, so the next step is to refine them. Once your selection is made, click on the ‘Refine Edge’ button and enable ‘Smart Radius.’ Increase the radius to about 6-7 pixels or adjust to what suits your image. This step ensures the hair and other fine details stand out beautifully.

Output to Selection

Output your refined selection and cut it from the background by pressing ‘Ctrl’ (‘Command’ on Mac) and ‘J.’ This copies your selection to a new layer, ready for the next step.

Step 3: Bringing in Color and Text

Now, for some text! Select the Vertical Type Tool, use any bold and clear font—I went with Arial Regular at 94 points. Ensure your text stands out by choosing any color except white against your white background. Type out your chosen name or phrase and adjust the leading (the space between the letters) using the Character panel for a cleaner look.

Add a Pop of Color

Merge the layers with ‘Ctrl’ (‘Command’) and ‘E.’ Select the Paint Bucket Tool and start filling each letter with a different bright color, making sure each one pops out vibrantly against the black outlines you’ve just created. Got your colors down? Great, let’s add some more pizzazz!

Step 4: Mosaic Magic

Duplicate your layer and head to ‘Filter,’ choose ‘Pixelate,’ then ‘Mosaic.’ A cell size of 30 pixels is a good start, however, you might want to tweak this according to the specific resolution and size of your image.

Applying the Median Filter

While in ‘Filter,’ select ‘Noise’ and then ‘Median,’ choosing a radius that turns your mosaic elements into more circular shapes. For our example, 10 pixels do the trick.

Step 5: Adding the Sci-Fi Edge

Choose ‘Filter Gallery’, open the stylize folder, and apply ‘Glowing Edges.’ Play around with the edge width, brightness, and smoothness to get that perfect sci-fi glow. Our recommended settings are an edge width of 4, brightness of 14, and smoothness of 15.

Finishing Up with Motion Blur

Time for some dramatic flair—copy the layer, head to ‘Filter,’ then ‘Blur,’ and select ‘Motion Blur.’ Keep the angle at 0 degrees and set the distance to a whopping 1000 pixels. Finally, change the blend mode to Screen and adjust the opacity to 60% for that ethereal look.

And there you have it! You’ve now illustrated a mind-bending, retro sci-fi portrait ready to dazzle and inspire imagination. So go ahead, experiment with your designs, and bring digital art to life with this playful effect that merges retro vibes with modern creativity.

Happy designing, and may your future portraits beam with as much digital flair as you’ve infused into them!
