Create a Custom Emblem Logo with a Cosmic Backdrop
Ever wondered how to create your very own emblem logo complete with a striking star-flare background? We’re taking that ambition from wishful thinking to reality in this two-part series. Today, we’ll journey through Part 1, where you’ll learn how to create the base design and establish a visually compelling background. We’ll start with a blank canvas and transform it into a cosmic stage for your emblem logo using a rich set of Photoshop techniques. Whether you’re crafting a logo for a project or just exploring the galaxy of graphic design, this tutorial is your rocket ship.
Setting the Stage
Start by creating a new document in Photoshop. A blank slate is like the universe before the Big Bang—full of potential and anticipation. You’ll want to set your dimensions to 1550 x 870 pixels and opt for a resolution of 150 pixels per inch. Your color mode should be RGB with 8 bits per channel. This palette sets the groundwork for vibrant colors and stark contrasts.
Filling your canvas with black is like drawing a curtain over your stage—it’s the perfect background to let those star flares pop. Access the Fill window with Shift + F5, select Black, and confirm. Now, move on to the real cosmic move: adding a Lens Flare. This will channel your inner J.J. Abrams and gets things popping. Navigate to Filter > Render > Lens Flare, exacting a 50-300 mm zoom at 50% opacity.
Breaking Out of Bounds
Next, you’ll want to increase the universe (or canvas) size to 500% using the Transform Tool (Ctrl/Cmd + T).
Link the width and height, apply the change, and suddenly, you’ve got more space than you know what to do with—sort of like the ever-expanding cosmos.
Post-expansion, crop it back down to your desired viewable area using Image > Crop, all while ensuring your focus remains sharp and centered.
A Splash of Color
After unlocking your background layer (by clicking the lock icon), it’s time to colorize your lens flare.
A tint of color over the black backdrop injects vibrancy and life into an otherwise modest background. By double-clicking the layer and using the Color Overlay option, you have the chance to add personal sparkle; a hexadecimal example cool enough to get you started is 008AFF.
Adding Depth and Texture
Now comes the time to enhance dimension—fortify your setting with depth and texture. Create a new layer and fill it with 50% gray.
Open the Filter Gallery and find Halftone Pattern under the Sketch folder; Line pattern type at a size of 1 and contrast of 50%. This will instate a sophisticated layer of texture, resembling nostalgic scan lines.
Set the layer blending mode to Divide and dial back the opacity to 80%; it’s as if you’re unraveling a secret look never meant to be broadcasted. For that elusive vignette effect, use an elliptical marquee tool to create a feathered black border, adding mystery and focus to your core image.
Starburst to Center Stage
Meet your next bold move: emanating energy with a starburst shape. Create a new layer, choosing the Polygon Tool designed for a star shape, set with 99 sides and smooth indents.
With the right settings and some strategic dragging, you’ll see light dart out from the center. Blend using Soft Light at 50% opacity, and you bear witness firsthand to an aura worthy of any epic logo.
Text and Triangle: The Logo Core
Here’s the crux: what’s a logo without its defining text?
Select a suitably heavy font like Great Lakes NF Regular. Center-align it over your backdrop, and tweak sizes and letter spacing until it fades into harmony with the striking starburst.
Embrace symmetry and complimentary geometrics with a triangular frame. The Polygon Tool set to Shape allows for fine adjustments, ensuring every veil and vertex suits the overall cosmic allure.
Bringing It Together
With all individual pieces flourishing, the final act is bringing it all together. Group layers for a tidy Photoshop workspace—your background is Bkg, or another identifier of your choice. It’s not just organization, but strategy. Layers behave like spectators in an amphitheater, ordered and focused, ready to support the creative crescendo.
Voila, you’ve done it; your starry logo landscape is alive, waiting to serve as the gallery or centerpiece of your next graphic project.
Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll dive deeper into coloring, textures, and dimension.
Your journey to mastery is as expansive as the galaxy itself, never settling and always learning. Happy designing, future graphic luminaire!
