Bringing Ethereal Vision to Life with Photoshop

While we’re used to letting our imaginations run wild, Photoshop allows us to do something even cooler: we can actually create those faces in the clouds and bring our flights of fancy down to earth, or in this case, up to the sky.
This guide is your step-by-step adventure through Photoshop’s landscape, showing you how to embed a face within the clouds, merging reality with the fantastic. Let’s dive into this atmospheric creation process!
Selecting and Preparing the Face
First things first, open an image of a face. This will be the main character in your heavenly tableau. I used a versatile stock image from Shutterstock for this project. Before we blend it with the clouds, we have to skillfully extract the face from its original setting.
To separate the portrait, we wield the Quick Selection Tool like a Photoshop wizard. With a deft touch, painted within a radius of 10 to 20 pixels, we sweep over the hair, face, and neck. Any wayward selections are easily dismissed by Alt/Option-dragging them back into place. A quick check using the “Q” shortcut reveals our masked selection.

Crafting the Perfect Cloudy Canvas
Once isolated, we give the face a dramatic Black & White adjustment, then flip its look entirely with the Invert command. As a powerhouse move to keep your options open (and effects reusable), convert the freshly adjusted image into a Smart Object. This nifty move ensures you can swap in a new face effortlessly without losing the magic of your meticulous efforts.
Next, summon your cloud-filled canvas. You can either use a cloud image provided in the video or find a suitable atmospheric scene from your own collection. The minimalist tactician knows that leaving the center of the sky mostly clear elevates your final composition.
Transfer your adjusted portrait over to the cloud document using the Move Tool, ensuring it’s nestled comfortably with the clouds. Align its blending prowess by setting it to Screen mode, letting it merge seamlessly with its fluffy companions.
Sculpting the Skyward Sculpture
Now, to resize and position this ephemeral visage, we engage the Transform Tool, nuanced with era-specific commands. Those steering versions pre-CC 2019 hold Alt/Option + Shift when reshaping, while newer editions retain the Alt/Option solo for the task.
Once stationed, apply a subtle Gaussian Blur of around 4 pixels to soften the caress between clouds and face—a gentle foreshadowing of the blend to come.
Applying Luminosity Magic
Enter the enchanting world of luminosity blending with the Blend If feature. By manipulating sliders, both for the face and its cloudy companions, you allow tones to disappear selectively, blending them together magically. Revel in how the lights and shadows intermingle, creating a smooth transition using the alt-split technique. Deftly split and slide those icons to achieve a mystical mingle that’s tailor-made.
Fine-Tuning and Final Flourishes
For those spots you prefer free of attention, like the area beneath the neck, a layer mask is your sworn ally. With the Brush Tool equipped with a soft round brush (hint: both Opacity and Flow should sit at 100%), conceal unwanted areas with a few confident strokes.
To add an ethereal halo, duplicate the face layer, up the Gaussian Blur to a soothing 30 pixels, and then dial down the Opacity to an ephemeral 50%.
And just like that, the face in the clouds emerges as a captivating spectacle, transforming the everyday sky into a scene straight from your imagination.
