Bring the 70s and 80s Back to Life with a Modern Twist

Nostalgia lovers, rejoice! We’re taking a digital trip down memory lane to the days when color pencil drawings were the height of cool. Think David Bowie album covers or those impossibly stylish retro advertisements. Today, we’re channeling the colorful vibes of the 1970s and 1980s into your photos with a few nifty Photoshop moves. This is the ideal project for anyone wanting a funky, artsy touch to their digital photographs. Best part? Once set up, you can swap in any photo you fancy without starting from scratch. The Digital Canvas Setup

Before we get erging our creative magic, you’ll need a solid paper texture to lay your art upon. It sets the stage, giving your digital work that authentic, pencil-on-paper feel. Luckily, we’ve got you covered with a paper texture. This can be found through the link provided in our video description or project files.

Setting Up Your Photo

Begin by choosing a photograph you want to transform—perhaps one with some sentimental value or just one that’s totally meme-worthy. If you’re following along with our video, you might recognize the image we’ve snagged from Shutterstock.

Step-by-Step Photo Placement:

  1. Drag and Drop: Once you’ve got your photo, place it onto your downloaded paper texture with a simple drag-and-drop.
  2. Center and Size: Hold the Shift key as you place it to ensure it stays smack in the middle. Adjust the size to your liking using the Transform Tool. Simply Ctrl (or Cmd)+T and make sure the dimensions stay in sync by linking the Transform Tool’s width and height.
  3. Transform and Crop: If needed, crop your masterpiece using the Rectangular Marquee Tool.

Photo to Drawing: The Artistic Transition

It’s now time to transform your image into a work of art that Ziggy Stardust himself would approve of.

The Smart Way to Edit

Convert your photo to a Smart Object—this allows for non-destructive editing. In simpler terms, it means you can swap out photos without redoing effects. Handy, right?

Effects Magic: From Blurry to Bold

Unsharp Mask: This effect amplifies contrast around your image’s edges, enhancing that pencil-drawn vibe. Our magical formula: 150% Amount, 3 pixels Radius, 0 Levels Threshold.

Oil Paint Feel: Here’s where we inject stylization. Navigate through Filter > Stylize > Oil Paint and adjust settings to our well-tested formula: Stylization: 2, and Cleanliness, Scale, Bristle Detail: 10 each. Make sure “Lighting” is checked with an angle of 120 degrees and Shine of 0.2.

Poster Edges for Depth: Lastly, using the Artistic > Poster Edges, you’ll add texture and depth. Set Edge Thickness to 10, Edge Intensity to 0, and Posterization to 6.

Crafting the Vivid Retro Look

Add noise to bring out that nostalgic feel. Fill a new layer with 50% gray, then head to Filter > Noise > Add Noise. Keep settings to 50% Gaussian and Monochromatic.

Play with the Blend Mode—Overlay works wonders here—and reduce opacity to a breezy 80%. Finish up by placing the paper texture over the top layer, switching its Blend Mode to Multiply.

Final Embellishments with Elegance

Now, let’s soften it around the edges with a vignette, spotlighting your subject. Use the Elliptical Marquee Tool and Feather the selection at 100 pixels. Mask, brush over areas you wish to highlight, and voilà! You’ve instantaneously resurrected a 70s classic.

The Effortless Replacement: Swapping Photos

Should the artistic muse inspire, swap out photos without reimagining the wheel! Simply use the Snapshot function via the History panel to save your current setup, open your Smart Object, and replace the source image using File > Place Embedded.

This retro color pencil drawing effect is a fascinating juxtaposition of the old and the new. It’s a charming way to revitalize your image repertoire with subtle nods to legendary styles.

Remember, creativity is no microwave meal—it’s in the simmering and seasoning. So experiment with different images and effects as you see fit! Just think of the joy you’ll bring as your snaps dazzle in hues of yesteryear.
