We Bring the Force to Your Designs
If you’re a Star Wars fanatic and an Adobe Photoshop enthusiast, you’re in luck! Today, we’re taking you on an out-of-this-world journey to create an awe-inspiring poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In this tutorial (divided into two parts for your convenience), we’re starting with the basics: crafting a cosmic backdrop filled with stars, galaxies, and the emblematic Resistance Insignia. So, buckle in and ignite your creative lightsaber because you’re about to create something galactic!
Your Toolkit: Essentials for Galactic Creation
Before embarking on this journey, you’ll want to make sure you’re equipped with the right tools. Download the necessary Photoshop file which includes the essential Rebel Resistance emblem and a brushed steel texture. This will be your canvas as you create the galactic masterpiece. If you’re still not using Photoshop, Adobe offers a fantastic deal with Photoshop, Lightroom, and 20 GB of cloud storage for just $7.99 per month. Trust us, it’s worth it!
Step Into the Cosmic Void
In Part 1 of this adventure, we’re setting the stage with stars, galaxies, and a basic Resistance Insignia. A fundamental aspect is to manipulate the brushed steel texture. Here’s the Jedi training you need:
- Apply Polar Coordinates: Start by making the texture layer active. Head over to Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates, and select “Rectangular to Polar”. This will infuse your design with a warped, cosmic look.
- Blend with Precision: Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool to blend the top center. Select the area, go to Edit > Fill, and choose “Content Aware” to seamlessly merge this part with its surroundings.
- Emblem Integration: With the emblem layer hidden, make selections of its shape using Ctrl or Cmd-click. Unlock the background, invert the selection (Ctrl or Cmd + Shift + I), and delete everything outside the selection with the “Delete” key.
- Enhance Contrast: To make the emblem pop, adjust the levels (Ctrl or Cmd + L). Set the input black to 48 and the white level to 230, bringing that epic Resistance Insignia to life.
Crafting the Cosmic Canvas
After prepping the emblem, it’s time to conjure the star-studded sky:
- Layer and Duplicate: Create a new document (672×870 pixels at 150 PPI in RGB mode) and bless it with three layers named “Large Stars”, “Stars”, and “Border”.
- Cosmic Noise: On the “Stars” layer, add noise (30%, Gaussian, Monochromatic) followed by a Gaussian blur for that stellar spread. Elevate the stars’ visibility through levels adjustments.
- Large Stars Brilliance: Similar to the “Stars” layer, but with 100% noise and slightly different levels settings to allow the larger stars to shine through smaller ones when the Blend Mode is set to “Screen”.
- Container of Stars: Fold the star layers into a folder named “Stars”, reducing opacity to 40% to maintain the subtle cosmic veil before the color and cloud layers.
Adding Drama and Depth
Next, we infuse this universe with luminous clouds and color:
- Rendered Clouds: With the “Stars” folder, create two new layers—Add clouds on the “Clouds” layer using the Cloud Filter and switch the Blend Mode to “Color Dodge” for that bright dreamy effect.
- Painting With Light: Activate “Layer 1” (renamed to “Colors”), grab the Brush Tool, and with soft strokes, bring color to your cosmic creation using a 600-pixel, 0% hardness brush at 10% opacity.
- Accentuating Light with Lens Flares: Finally, on a new layer filled with black, render a lens flare at 125% brightness with a “50-300mm Zoom”. Set the Blend Mode to “Screen” and marvel at your cosmic masterpiece!
Step Into the Further Adventures
In Part 2, we will peel back the layers of this cosmic onion and apply more dramatic flourishes to our masterpiece, including detailed text and lighting effects. Continue to let the Force be your guide!
And there you have it—a detailed recipe for a Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster that’s bound to light up your creative universe and take your Photoshop skills to hyper-speed.
May the creative Force be with you!
